4 Mar 2003 - The Willow Hedge

Sally Murray is currently constructing a living willow hedge behind Class1/2. The hedge is 30m long. Children received demonstrations throughout the process of building the hedge.

Stage 1 - The hedge is marked out using black sheeting. The sheeting will help prevent weeds growing at the base of the hedge which will give the roots of the willow a better chance for growth. The sheeting is marked with 1 foot squares. Bundles of willow rods await planting.
Stage 2 - Holes are made in the centre of each marked square peircing the sheeting and the soil below. Rods are pushed into the holes, through the sheeting and firmly into the ground so that they stand upright. The bottoms of willow rods are trimmed. Roots will begin to grow once they are in the ground. The whole row is completed.

Stage 3 - Willow rods are woven between the upright rods, in, out and then pushed down firmly into the ground to the left of the upright rods.
Willow rods are woven between the upright rods, in, out and then pushed down firmly into the ground to the right of the upright rods forming a criss-cross pattern.

Stage 4 - the loose ends are tied off using plastic tags to hold them in place.

Now we will watch our hedge come to life over the next few weeks and months!!
